Lawmakers introduce bill to create Chesapeake Bay national park, with plan to minimize traffic

In an exciting development, U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen and Congressman John Sarbanes have put forward a proposal designating the Chesapeake Bay as a unified National Recreation Area, with specific protection for 3 sites in Annapolis. This idea has been under consideration for over four decades, and it comes as no surprise, given the Chesapeake’s undeniable status as a national treasure that deserves safeguarding. However, as we applaud this move to preserve the Bay’s natural beauty and ecological importance, we must also be cautious about potential impacts on our local watermen and their livelihoods. Striking a delicate balance between conservation and supporting local communities will be essential as we move forward with this legislation.
